As many of you know, I will conclude my service as President and Chair of the Board of Directors of the Commodore John Barry Arts & Cultural Center on November 1, 2026.

Serving this organization has been one of the greatest honors of my life. What began for me as a commitment to preserving and celebrating Irish heritage became an opportunity to help shape the future of one of Philadelphia’s most important cultural institutions.

When I reflect on my time in leadership, I am proud not only of what we accomplished but of how we accomplished it, through the dedication of volunteers, board members, staff, supporters, sponsors, union partners, donors, and countless members of our community who believe in the mission of the Irish Center.

Together, we achieved one of the most significant milestones in the Irish Center’s history: the successful transition to 501(c)(3) charitable status. This transformation strengthened our foundation, expanded our ability to secure grants and charitable support, and positioned the organization for long-term sustainability. It ensured that future generations would have an even stronger Irish Center to steward and advance.

I am equally proud of the improvements made to our historic home. Through partnerships with local unions and skilled tradespeople, we were able to undertake important upgrades that enhanced the facility while preserving its character and history. These improvements have helped make the Irish Center a more welcoming and functional gathering place for our community.

Another achievement that will have a lasting impact is the development of our library and archives. Through the generosity of many supporters, we have built a growing collection of Irish books, newspapers, historical documents, certificates, photographs, and cultural artifacts. What is emerging is a first-class resource that preserves the stories of Ireland and the Irish American experience for future generations.

During these years, we also broadened the Center’s programming and strengthened its connections throughout Philadelphia, Ireland, and beyond. We expanded concerts, lectures, exhibits, educational programs, family events, and cultural celebrations. We developed new relationships with community organizations, educational institutions, business leaders, government representatives, and cultural partners. Through initiatives connected to America 250 and other collaborative efforts, we demonstrated that the Irish story remains an integral part of the American story and that the Irish Center can serve as both a guardian of tradition and a catalyst for new ideas.

Perhaps most importantly, we undertook strategic planning that will help guide the organization for years to come. Together, we reaffirmed our commitment to preserving Irish culture while embracing opportunities to engage broader audiences through arts, culture, education, history, and community programming.

None of these accomplishments belong to any one individual. They are the result of a community that cares deeply about the Irish Center and its future. I have simply been fortunate enough to serve alongside so many talented and dedicated people.

As I prepare to step away from my leadership roles, I do so with confidence and optimism. The Commodore John Barry Arts & Cultural Center is stronger than it has been in many years. It has a clear mission, a growing community of supporters, a stronger financial and governance foundation, and an exciting future ahead.

Thank you for the trust you placed in me, for your friendship, and for your unwavering support of this remarkable institution. While my role may change, my commitment to the Irish Center will not. I will remain a proud member and advocate, and I look forward to watching the next chapter unfold.

The Irish Center has given me far more than I could ever give in return, and for that I will always be grateful.
